LACANIAN EXCURSION
We find ourselves in an ontopolitical setting that can be defined as a neurotic ceaseless demand for a “guarantee of truth” almost a century after it was described by Lacan in his paper “Au-délà du ‘Principe de réalitié,’” published in 1936. The search for a “guarantee of truth” that marks “contemporary psychology and philosophy” can only be transcendental, “even when the philosopher has just denied its existence,” claims Lacan (referring to the denial of the existence of the transcendental).17 Paradoxically, it is precisely within the framework of the Lacanian psychoanalytical legacy, that is, through the postmodernist philosophico-theoretical reception of Lacan’s theory, that we have come to the point where the purported “emancipation” from the need for certitude has turned into its opposite. As I already argued, this situation is the result of the repetitive operation of rigid mutual exclusion taking place between the language and the Real.
But is this something that is part of the repertoire of Lacan’s original claims? True, Lacan categorizes the Real as the impossible, as the unthinkable, but this does not mean that it does not exist for the language, that the real does not interact productively with the signifying chain and is, hence, an active force in the processes of discursive configurations. The insisting on this mutuality of rapport is present already in Lacan’s works, such as the above-mentioned “Au-délà du ‘Principe de réalité’”18 and notably in a chapter of The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis entitled “Tuché and Automaton.”19
